THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

BOOK FOURTH: THE CLOSED DOOR

CHAPTER 1: THE RENCOUNTER BY THE POOL

The month of July is a honeymoon for Clym and Eustacia. They live in their little house at Alderworth “with a monotony which” is “delightful to them.” If it rains, they are happy because they can “remain indoors together all day”; if it is sunny, they are charmed because they can “sit together on the hills.” After three or four weeks, however, Clym resumes his reading. Eustacia ponders on how she shall get Clym to go to Paris. Her hopes are “bound up in this dream,” but so far she has never dared to bring up the subject. Early in August an incident occurs that helps bring matters to ahead. Soon after receipt of her aunt’s money, Thomasin had sent a note to thank her; but Mrs. Yeobright has never heard from Clym. Wondering, she questions Christian and gets confused replies. Hearing that Eustacia is visiting her grandfather, Mrs. Yeobright decides to go to see her and find out. When Christian learns her intent, he blurts out the truth as far as he knows it - “that the guineas had been won by Wildeve.” He tells Mrs. Yeobright that Wildeve had said “you ought to have gied Mr. Clym’s share to Eustacia, and that’s perhaps what he’ll do himself.”
